Maruti Suzuki, TCS, Cipla, Shree Cements top gainers, losers today

Indian markets witnessed a cautious tone on Monday amidst weak global cues after concerns over economic growth emerged amidst political instability in Russia. Buying in pharma, consumer durables, and auto stocks kept bears off the bay in Sensex and Nifty 50. Midcap and smallcap stocks also picked up momentum. However, PSU banks and oil & gas stocks saw slight selling. India’s volatility index jumped over 1.4%.

Sensex ended at 62,970, lower by 9.37 points or 0.01%. On the other hand, Nifty 50 settled at 18,691.20, up by 25.70 points or 0.14%.

Talking about the market’s performance, Vinod Nair, Head of Research at Geojit Financial Services said, “The global market exhibited a negative bias as concerns regarding economic growth emerged in light of the political instability in Russia. This instability led to an increase in oil prices, driven by worries over potential supply disruptions, given Russia’s status as one of the largest oil producers.”

On the domestic front, Nair added, “The market experienced limited downside as the pharma and auto sectors provided support. Additionally, mid and small-cap stocks were seen recovering their positions following a recent sell-off, indicating a regained investor confidence in these segments.”

About 1,797 stocks advanced, while 1,860 stocks declined and 160 stocks remained unchanged. A total of 114 stocks hit new 52-week highs, on the contrary, 42 stocks hit new 52-week lows.
