World markets today: US stocks gain, S&P 500 hits record high

US stocks gained on Monday with the benchmark S&P 500 hitting a fresh record high.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 55.75 points, or 0.15 per cent at the open, to 37,919.55. The S&P 500 opened higher by 13.61 points, or 0.28 per cent, at 4,853.42, while the Nasdaq Composite gained 82.08 points, or 0.54 per cent, to 15,393.05 at the opening bell.

On Friday, the S&P 500 jumped 1.23 per cent to end the session at 4,839.81 points. The Nasdaq jumped 1.70 per cent to 15,310.97 points, while Dow Jones Industrial Average rose 1.05 per cent to 37,863.80 points.

The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.09 per cent from 4.13 per cent late Friday and from 5 per cent in October. The 2-year Treasury yield slipped to 4.37 per cent from 4.39 per cent.

In Europe, stocks rose on Monday. Britain’s FTSE 100 edged up 0.2 per cent at 7,477.35 points. Germany’s DAX added 0.7 per cent at 16,664.97. France’s CAC 40 rose 0.6 per cent at 7,417.35.

Asian equities closed mixed. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index fell 2.3 per cent at 14,961.18. China’s Shanghai Composite lost 2.7 per cent at 2,756.34.

Japan’s Nikkei 225 rose 1.6 per cent at 36,546.95.

Oil prices edged higher on Monday on supply worries due to wars in the Middle East and Ukraine.

Brent crude rose 27 cents to $78.83 a barrel by 1334 GMT. The front-month US West Texas Intermediate crude futures contract for February delivery was up 35 cents at $73.76 a barrel. The March WTI contract was up 31 cents at $73.56.

Gold prices fell on Monday with easing expectations of a Fed interest rate cut at the end of March. Spot gold was down 0.4 per cent at $2,021.49 per ounce at 9:47 a.m. ET (1447 GMT), while US gold futures fell 0.3 per cent to $2,023.00.
